i liked this, but some strutural parts were confusing (why is salt introduced only at the end? when did therese get back to chicago?), and everyone in it needs like ten therapists.

This is somewhere between a 3 and 4. For the first 70%, I was soooo sure I knew how it was going to end, and it seemed like it was going to be the boring and entirely-predictable unwinding... but then I was pleasantly surprised! Some if it was predictable, yes, but there was enough of a variation on the big ideas to actually get something new from it.

My big beef was, actually, Carol herself. I get that the book is about Therese's coming of age, but Carol is a pretty thin foil for that. I never ...more

It took me a little bit to warm up to this, but in the end I very much enjoyed it. At the beginning, Theresa is just kind of floating along letting life take her where it may. But after she comes to know Carol, we see her start to take more and more agency within her own life. A very interesting character study.
