What Members Thought

This is, hands down, the best audiobook I have listened to since Wolf Hall, and I think the all-star cast Max Son-of-Mel Brooks lined up to read this amazing, gripping, thoughtful piece of fiction. First of all, the multiple points-of-view storytelling were amazing, evocative, mesmerizing, and sometimes very emotional. The vocal performances were fantastic, stellar. If there was a weak link, it was listening to Simon Pegg overdo it just a touch on the Texas accent, but it's easy to write that of

I was expecting this to be a funny book for some reason, but it wasn't. At all. Freaky in an old school Stephen King sort of way. I'd give it 5 stars, but I wish it had included some timeslines/maps/nerdy stuff like that. The stories skipped around in place and time so much, it was a little hard to follow the overall narrative of the war.

If anyone had told me that my first five-star book of 2008 would be about zombies, I would have laughed at them.
That being said, I was hooked from the first word, entranced from the first chapter and enthralled as I read this collection of oral histories regarding a fictious zombie war.
With the exception of the undead, the reactions of the governments were plausible. The characters speaking directly to the "camera" were short pencil sketches that just plain worked.

Wow. The astonishing/exhausting way Mr. Brooks has created a completely full alternate universe, complete with terms, facts, figures and backstories is nothing short of amazing. However, I felt the book lacked a little bit on the intrigue side - I got tired of hearing about military transport and climatology after a while. But despite this, World War Z is still my second favorite zombie book of 2010 (The Strain still holds the top spot).

A very thorough interpretation of how the world might react to and handle a zombie apocalypse. Clearly Brooks knows his stuff (I'm sure writing the Handbook beforehand helped him prepare for this book). It was also a great idea to approach the book through oral histories - which actually made the audiobook experience feel much more vivid). All in all, I thought it was really well done.

Started on the plane ride from San Francisco to Toronto. This is a really well-executed idea, and if you can buy the zombie thing, actually quite plausible. (And terrifying.)
Maybe a little long, as I neared the last 50 pages I was ready for it to be over.
I'm not sure I got all the tie-togethers of each story, but I am quite impressed by this book. ...more

Man, this was just absolutely brilliant. By playing on current trends and events, he managed to create this amazingly real world where the very unrealistic zombie threat felt logical. Setting it up as interviews with survivors around the world was a creative idea and made the whole thing come alive.

I began reading this book expecting to be completely engaged by the best zombie book of all time, as recommended by many. Unfortunately, the book did not live up to the anticipation. It is a good read, but i wouldn't go into it expecting the definitive zombie work.
