Meet Jake Marlowe. He's a millionaire, a chain-smoker, a sex addict, and a man who likes a good tumbler of aged whiskey. He's also a paranoiac, has a hair-trigger temper, and is a bit of a nihilist.

Did I mention he's a 200-year-old werewolf?

As The Last Werewolf opens, Marlowe is given the news by his human "handler" that the only other known member of his monster-species has just been assassinated. "It's official," Harley said. "They killed the Berliner two nights ago. You're the last."

I'm not much on horror, and I'm no great fan of the current vogue of horror-infused pop culture, but I can be convinced...and so I gave this "werewolf literary thriller" a try. Not much to write home about. The book's full of sex and violence, but it was the hyper-verbal world-weary postmodern musings that took up the majority of the book and got real tedious. The writing was just trying too hard, too self-infatuated, too show-offy.

The plot, the sex, and the violence picked up some of the slack

This was described as a "literary werewolf story", and for the most part I agree. It was a little Too literary at times, and I found myself struggling to get through some parts, but about half-way through the story took a surprising turn and I was hooked. Definitely refreshing to read after all of the teen vamp/were stories I've read lately. ...more

Was not expecting this to be the most romantic love story I've read in ages. Was also not expecting a protagonist with that level of badass intellectualism and endearing sweetness.

I kept running into the recurring problem of Grainer persistently being described as "looking Native American." What is that? It's a lazy generalization. Dude, please. A generalized stereotype based on a group of people with darker complexions and higher cheekbones does not apply to ALL Indigenous people of the contine

Full of literary references and great lines ("Reader, I ate him.). Still, 200-something years on earth hasn't taught the protagonist much about women. ...more
