I held high hopes for Nocturnes, because the issues that it deals with – nostalgia, relationships that are not meant to be and missed chances – usually appeal to me. Unfortunately, none of these quirky stories managed to move me. I simply could not sympathize with any of the characters in the book. A fairly blah set of short stories from the usually awesome Kazuo Ishiguro. Oddly enough, they sometimes reminded me of J. D. Salinger's short works (especially Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters). I say oddly, because I really like Salinger's stories. But not these. Go figure.

I have really loved Ishiguro's novels but the disappointment I felt in this collection of short stories leads me to conclude that the short story is not a medium well suited to his talents. Five stories (all about music) are included. The first three stories were adequate but the fourth was simply preposterous with uninteresting characters and the last was not memorable in any way. I would not recommend this at all.
