I knew a bit about this book since it is referenced so often--and the ending is always talked about too. It's a famously sad book, so I was prepared for that, but it's also brilliantly written.

This is another classic book that I wasn't forced to read in high school, and likely enjoyed much more in reading it on my own later. Though my modern perspective makes me hate some of the characterization, I acknowledge the work as both a work of genius and a product of (and comment on) its time.
