I challenged myself to finally read some Charles Dickens because it seemed that to not have read any of his novels was a fact that would not allow yourself to refer to yourself as serious reader or 'well-read'. I started off with Bleak House. It had everything that I was lead to expect about Dickens--great storytelling, loads of interesting side characters with sub-plots, great description really giving the reader the ability to visualize, smell, and feel Victorian England. I love-love Dickens, but I didn't think Dickens was capable of this kind of novel. The first paragraph is brillant. The ending is astonishing and unforgetable. I look forward to reading it one again someday.
