Mannnn, I feel like a jerk saying that I didn't love this, but ... I didn't love this.
Do I read too many memoirs? Am I too demanding of memoirs? Am I just a cold-hearted bitch? Was I just not in the right head space for this? Well, I doubt it, maybe, maybe, and probably.
I just tend not to do well with books whose main aspect is a big emotional impact, and I usually don't care for coming-of-age stories, which this effectively is.

One of those books I've been meaning to read FOREVER.

I know I probably lose all literary criticism street cred for not liking this book, but I really didn't. It was just so negative and sad and I got kind of mad at her several times. Also I don't buy that her memory provided such flowy descriptions to last a hundred pages of life before age 8. I thought the kind of rote recitation made her sound sort of simple, which I don't think is true, but perhaps that was her way of trying to potray a young mind at work.

This is one of those books that I really liked, but thought I would like better. It is fascinating to read about Maya Angelou's childhood, and often traumatizing, but I think I'm actually interested in her young adulthood more. That said, it is a classic and should be read by, well, everyone. It's still a very good book.

Real life is often filled with depressing events and feelings. I didn't enjoy this and wasn't particularly uplifted by it. But it does have some value for those who can learn from someone else's life.
