I really enjoyed this book. It's set in an alternate world around the time of Ancient Rome and tells the stories of Laia and Elias. Laia is a Scholar, the people group defeated by the ruling Martials. Elias is in training to be an enforcer for the Martials. Both characters experience tragedy, betrayal and friendship. Both are more complex than they seem. I liked that this book reminded me of the best of young adult fiction (fast-paced and easy to read) while giving me a new setting, a new story, ...more

I really liked this unique world and the centrality of a variety of female characters. In the end, this just fell a bit short of 4 stars because there was so much packed in, and a fast resolution of some complex problems.
