***Edited September 2024 - Because my finger is on the pulse of exactly nothing I have just heard about terrible allegations of sexual abuse made against Neil Gaiman made by two women, one his nanny. These certainly give me pause as to an author I have enjoyed in the past (even though not with this book. How much do allegations like this impact what you read and enjoy?
I can't wait to see the movie version of this excellent story, from the previews I've seen it looks like they did a good job of it, hope they made it scary enough.
I do believe this is one of the scariest stories I've read, even on a second read. Neil Gaiman is good at that, especially in his shorter works. There is so much meat to this tale, I could see many p.h.d. dissertations being written on all the greatly important subjects he brings up, deals with succinctly, firmly sets aside and gets o ...more

Great Book!
I read this in one sitting. What a page-turning creative frightening story. And my favorite character is definitely the cat with no name ; )

I picked this book up in an airport. 85% of my decision to buy it was based on the appeal of the cover. 15% was based on the description of the story. It was absolutely nothing of the story I was expecting. (Had I read the cover more closely, I would have known in advance that it was a "childrens" story.)

So I'd give the writing a 4.5 as it was lovely, but my interest in the story itself dragged the rating down, unfortunately. :/ If GoodReads allowed half-stars I'd give this a 3.5.

Never read this author before I watched "Stardust." Decided I must read his work. Very clever and scary--it is good to see that not all adults lose their imagination.
