This book was creepy even as a middle grade novel. The premise centers on Coraline, who maybe does not quite appreciate her quirky, inattentive parents and her current life so much, and so upon finding a permanently-locked door in her own house, conspires to unlock it and explore. What she finds on the other side...let's not spoil it.

I read this as a children's horror book for a class and was really quite surprised at how creepy it was. I'm not sure if kids would recognize how deep the creepiness factor really was from an adult perspective but I'm sure they'd like it as a classic scary story. I think it will be interesting the see the movie version.

Eh, this was ok. Nowhere near the caliber of his other work. Quite frankly, this was a kids book that felt like a kids book, unlike books like The Hobbit or The Narnia chronicles which are equally enjoyable for adults. The writing was boring, the story moved too fast, there was barely any character development. Basically, the movie is 10 times better.
