Whoa. This book is sobering. The first essay is a funny anecdote of a man at a cocktail party trying to explain something to the author that she wrote a book about. Even when he learned she wrote the book he was referencing, he couldn't stop explaining things to her.

After that the essays get way more serious. I found the statistics she cites as shocking. Here are a few:

-A woman is beaten every 9 seconds.
-Women worldwide ages 15 - 44 are more likely to die or be maimed because of male violence

This collection of essays far exceeded my expectations. It is about more then men explaining things, though that “Men Explain Things to Me” essay that opens the book is well placed to open the conversation on the various aspects of a culture that has always been harmful to women. There is a great deal of emphasis on violence against women and a careful analysis of the aspects of culture that foster this environment. I love Solnit’s wit, humor, and absolute unwillingness to not hold back.

I'm torn, because the information is necessary and opened my eyes, but I was taken aback by the scathing tone throughout. I enjoyed some essays better than others, in particular the one on Virginia Woolf. ...more
