What Members Thought

I had already read the title essay from this collection, which is sometimes credited for spawning the term "mansplaining," though that word does not occur in the essay. I enjoyed reading it again, as I also very much enjoyed reading the rest of the essays in this collection.
For one reason and another, my Ms. magazines have been piling up unread lately, so it was very refreshing to read essays that did not need to justify their feminism, distance themselves from other feminists, or be followed by ...more

Five stars to the first and last essays; three to the rest.
I'm totally up for essays about Virginia Woolf and Susan Sontag, but they didn't belong in this collection. It bugs me when it's obvious that a collection is compiled of things published elsewhere, and no one bothered to think about the way they interact with one another when they're all presented together as a cohesive book... some key information was even repeated in these essays, and they clearly didn't belong in one book.

Most of the essays are pretty solid, but where this book really shines is in its cultural critique which some may dismiss because of the slippery slope connection between mansplaining and rape/femicide/gender-based violence. There is a lot of nutritious food for thought, whether or not your taste buds are suited for it.
