At around the 100 page mark, I was like "ugh, can we please dispense with this love-triangle b-plot because it takes away from the far more interesting problem of Shazi and Khalid" and what do you know? Renee Ahdieh obliged and gave the plot a left-turn which was really satisfying. I very much appreciated how sex is presented in this book, not glossed over or made to be an anathema.

I feel like I would have more patience with this if it were a stand alone, but knowing that it's a series...I can see exactly where it's going and I'm bored. I know this is based on A Thousand and One Nights, but it reminds me of at least 5 "beauty and the beast"-esque stories I've read in the last year. It'd be nice if there were more build up, more of a sense of dread surrounding this king who murders his wives.
