This was a big book (30 hours of audio) and it's hard science fiction - mostly. The first two thirds has a lot of science about space, yep. "Orbital mechanics" explained in great detail, and in ways that are HIGHLY plot and character relevant, which is pretty impressive. And the story did pull me along, the characters and relationships were interesting (in the first two thirds, anyway), and the whole apocalypse thing was pretty dramatic. If I had been rating just the first two-thirds of this book it would have gotten a 5 star review. But the last third felt like it either should have been left off, or, better yet, fleshed out into its own book altogether. And at almost 900 pages it's not like that couldn't have been done.

This is one of my favorite books ever. The narration for the audiobook is great. The author describes the story in Tolkienesque detail. This is in a short stack of books that I regularly reread whenever I need something familiar and comforting, and it always pulls me out of whatever reading funk I've fallen into.
