The story was a little too meandering for my tastes and I don't really get why so many people were obsessed with cracking this weird code. But I do like the idea of a 24-Hour Book Store and the characters were interesting. The audio narration is solid, lightly voiced to nice effect.

This book was so much fun. I haven't come across a book in so long that was a pleasure from beginning to end. It's not deep, by any means, but a wonderful adventure storytelling experience.

Clay is newly unemployed and takes a job as graveyard-shift clerk at a bookstore. But it's not an ordinary bookstore. This bookstore has strange, old books that no one has seen before. As Clay uncovers the secrets of the bookstore and its books, he delves into a mystery involving secret societies, underground crypts, and a centuries-old leader.

While DP's stories are set in a pre-internet world, where children can still sneak out to midnight movies and stumble upon excitement on their way, Sloan's story manages to keep some intrigue in a reality where most mysteries can be solved by calling a cell phone. I often find references to technology in these sorts of stories
