It felt like it took a year to read this book, but I see it was only about 3 weeks. 3 VERY LONG weeks.
So, look. I liked it alright. It was possibly THE SLOWEST BOOK ON EARTH in the beginning, but I had heard it picked up, and it did, sort of.
I did laugh out loud a few times, and exclaimed with surprise. It was occasionally entertaining. It's verrrrrrrry....English. It reminds me of the humor of Jane Austen - droll, a bit underground, tongue in cheek, but there.

This book had its little problems. The POV constantly shifted, which tends to pull me out of a book. The writing was a little too restrained. In general, I felt like I was reading the story rather than being immersed in it. And yet. The story was perfectly and intricately woven. Like a spell. Get it?

A very different sort of epic fantasy that won't be for everyone. I don't think I would have liked it as much if I hadn't read it in a serialized format (strict 30-page chunks per day over the course of a month); it would have felt far too long otherwise. The slow pace and Dickensian tone was a slow burn that grew on me over time.
