I loved "The Graveyard Book." I was intrigued by "American Gods." "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" was a remarkable story of childhood and memory. Yes, there are some rather scary parts in the story, but I wondered, even as I read it, whether it was any scarier than the original Grimm's or Andersen's fairy tales. I'm sure this tale will remain with me for a long time. I must go and read more of Gaiman's work. ...more

What a wonderful, sad, hopeful story. I loved it, as I have universally loved everything Neil Gaiman has written, though this one is probably now my favorite of his collected works.

I’m not quite sure how to rate this. It’s an undeniably easy read -- I could have devoured it in a single sitting (as it was, I devoured it over the course on a single evening, but I took a break to visit the grand p’s). I feel like it’s deceptively simple, however...or maybe I just want it to be something more than it is? I liked it, so don't get me wrong, but I didn't love it the way so many of my friends did. Maybe they raised my expectations too high; I don't know. Maybe if I'd listened to it in one sitting, the way so many people I know read it, I'd have "gotten" in better. Somehow, I just didn't connect with it the same way everyone else I know did. Mr. Gaiman's writing and narration is great and all, but I just didn't have the exultant experience that my friends had. ...more

I definitely went into this with a chip on my shoulder, but Gaiman charmed my pants off again. He also is, admittedly, a pretty good audiobook narrator. (More later, hopefully.)

I remember loving this book when I first read it ten years ago, and as an audiobook read by Neil Gaiman himself, it was highly enjoyable, even from the back seat of the car. My only complaint is that the chase between the enemy and the narrator grows repetitious.
