Read this for the library book club. At times I was somewhat bored and at other times I pondered what it would be like to be so consumed with a job such as the main character had. I liked the ending and that made it worth the time to read it.

Five stars, of course. Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize for Literature for a reason: this book is beautifully written and subtly devastating. I read this book years ago, and recently I saw it sitting on my shelves and felt compelled to read it again. I think I have a better understanding of the upstairs/downstairs world of Britain’s “great houses” now after having watched Downton Abbey. Firstly to qualify the voracity of my reading of late. I am traveling for work and spending a month in a unit by myself so before and after work I have nothing to do but read. I have set myself a challenge to not watch any TV so I can catch up on my TBR.

This book was lovely. A slow and interesting tale of a huge change in the social structure of Britain. It really showed the varied social structures of the time.
