This was amazing. The characters are wonderful, the humor is great, and it is such a well-told, intense story--an intensity that caught me off guard. This is certainly going to be in my classroom next year.

Read Harder 2018: comic not published by marvel, DC or image
I chose to read this comic because my middle daughter loved the online Nimona comics and we bought her this book for Christmas the year it came out. I figured this challenge was a chance to share some reading with my daughter and explore a new book.
Nimona is not what I expected. I’m not sure what I DID expect, but it wasn’t this. She surprised me throughout and I loved getting to know her a little better by the end of the book.

Kooky blend of science fiction and fantasy that plays with all kinds of superhero and villain tropes while thumbing it's nose at gender stereotypes. At times laugh-out-loud funny, and at others dark, dark, dark. Stevenson sneaks commentary on child abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, and authoritarianism into an otherwise lighthearted tale about goodhearted villains and not-so-super heroes. Plus shapeshifting! And magic + science!

Fun, sweet, adventure story in a graphic novel, complete with dragons, dastardly villains, and one sidekick with memorable hair.
