This book is so well done! I've been working through my backlog of debut novels and this one is great. It's heavy with family dysfunction, which isn't something I usually enjoy, but I think it really makes it a compelling story. Chapters alternate from different characters' perspectives across many years, but it still feels very fluid. ...more

I wished I could give more stars to this book. This book has so much potential with its interesting background: an African American family with 13 children who lives in crumbling Detroit. The plot and story itself is pretty interesting, but I wish Flournoy would explore more about the characters. Some issues raised in this book were left unfinished and even kind of been forgotten at the end, made me wonder what's the point it's been included in the book at all.
