Blew through this. It totally grabbed me from the beginning. Interesting how both Fates and Furies and this book have to do with the very different perceptions of the same events, which happen when we (necessarily) don't tell the whole truth to the people we love. I thought Ng did it better, of the two books, since the lies weren't big, intentional deceptions. A fast-paced, heartbreaking read that incorporates themes of race and interracial marriage, women's rights, family dynamics, the pressure parental expectations can put on a child, and grief. This takes place in the 70's so its exploration of race and attitudes towards women is very interesting and more than a backdrop to the story, as societal expectations ultimately created the desperate situation that the Lee's daughter found herself in.
