Uhmm, this book is a bit disappointing :( I'd expect so much more from this because the synopsis and blurb were very intriguing. Multicultural family in US in the 60s and 70s, mots of drama, thought provoking theme about family, race, culture.. And what is the most important thing: fitting in or standing out?

Thanks to the many CBR7 folks whose positive reviews of this book helped put it on my radar when I was in the airport gift store, looking for something to read. Celeste Ng has created a powerful novel (I can’t believe it’s a debut) that captures the complexity of many things—growing up in the Midwest in the 1970’s, being the Other in a variety of situations, and the way parents and children fail to understand each other.

Beautiful writing. I listened to it, but now I want to read it, too. The way Ng weaves the story so seamlessly is such a joy to witness.
