Listening to the audio version. It's so-so. It seems to take forever! I've listened for hours and when I checked against the print version I'm only 150 pages in? It seemed like it should be way more. I'm still listening but I might quit soon - that is, not borrow it again when my current loan finishes.

Also, I'm apparently accepting of random characters we've never met but are told are important being killed off, but introduce a stray cat and kill it off half a page later? THAT IS NOT OK.

This is a vampire story that is dramatically better written than most--it can easily transcend the "crappily written, crappily edited" world of Twilight and Sookie Sackhouse into the universe of the decent novel. I found myself sucked into the story immediately, because I liked the voice of the initial narrator, though it takes the plot a while to pick up. I really wanted to like this story. I certainly found the historical content interesting, but all in all the story dragged terribly and the ending was horrifically anticlimactic and dull for the amount of time spent getting there.

This was a hard one to rate. The first time I tried reading it, I was too scared to finish it. This time I got all the way through unscathed, and I really liked it a lot, but it was LONG. I usually love a long book, but by the end of this one I was sort of begging for it to end. Again, not because I didn't like it, but because I was tired and ready for something new. Strangely enough, the ending seemed pretty rushed to me. It's more of a 3 1/2 really. ...more

Although I did periodically think that the editor should have been a bit more liberal with cutting the descriptions, I found the story very gripping. The changing perspective was a little tough to keep on top of at first but I ended up really liking the shifts by the end.

High 3. I'm very susceptible to romanticizations of academia, European travelogues and vampire stories..... so I was bound to like this book. It is no game changer and it's not emotionally compelling, but it's a fun story ably told. ...more
