“They want to believe that magic is nothing but clever deception, because to think it real would keep them up at night, afraid of their own existence.”
This is one of those books I was ambivalent about before I started it. I had seen both good and bad reviews of it, so I had placed it in the “eh, maybe I’ll get to it someday” section of my TBR list. Turns out, “someday” was the end of December, as it was chosen for the January read in my book club. And my fears were unfounded. Once I started read ...more

I loved how descriptive the book was about it's settings and the artistry of the circus. Dammit, Night Circus, I really wanted to like you - all my friends liked you, but alas. 130 pages in, I could still care less about the characters and the central conceit of the book, the contest between dueling magicians, still remains vaguely hard to interpret or even see. Life is short, my dear, and I must bid you adieu for juicier pastures.

A great premise that suffered somewhat from a bit of over-writing and an unsatisfying end. I want to go to the circus, certainly, but the relationships between the people weren't developed or explained enough for me. I could picture the place and not the characters, which maybe was partially the point, but it didn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong, still a solid 3-3.5 star read, but not making its way into my Top 10.

The Night Circus is their venue to test their abilities against each other, but they in turn end up appreciating and in turn falling in love with each other despite the growing unde ...more

I enjoyed this book and its lush setting very much while I was reading it. In the light of day, I have more questions and criticisms of it, and am having a hard time mustering the enthusiasm for it that I felt yesterday. I found it to be a ridiculously difficult plot to describe, and the time/place jumps in each chapter made for some confusing moments while reading. Overall, though, the balance of magic and illusion, of a Romeo and Juliet story carried on amongst the circus, was beautiful and tr
