My initial impressions: stylistic, pretty, glossy, pretentious, white people doing fancy white people things with one non-white (Japanese) character who embodies the "exotic Asian" stereotype. Listening to Jim Dale narrate this made parts of it fun and enchanting and engrossing; however, I felt overall that this book was trying to be something more than what it was. The love story between the two magicians/illusionists/whatevers, Celia and Marco, was one of those eye-rolling, "destined," love-at ...more

I'm hovering between 3 and 4 stars for this one. I expected to love itand I did enjoy the read, but in the end, I thought it was just okay. I'm still trying to decide why that is, but part of it was that the ending felt much too easy to me. I wanted to read this book because it was showing up everywhere. Blogs I read loved it. People were recommending it to me. I was still a bit wary and thought I may not like it, but I loved it. It was everything that was promised to me and did not disappoint.

I really, really enjoyed this book. Reading in present tense was a little weird at first but I got over that quickly. This book was so very magical.

Ladies and Gentlemen, imagine if you will a new sort of circus. A circus that ignites the imagination, entices the audience to explore its new and spectacular tents.
How did this mysterious circus come to be? Who are the architects behind? Add to the extravaganza one mysterious competition and a thread of romance and you will see this is not your average circus. Intrigued? You'll just have to read it for yourself.

I found this book to be a wonderful way to spend some time.

Oh, but in the end the writing was great and the characters and plot didn't grab me. Basically, what Monica said.
