Second review: Still so good. there are certain poignant moments that made me tear up. Still one of my favorites. And Widget and Poppet are two of the loveliest characters ever written.

This is a fun, absorbing read. The scenes are brilliantly described; Ms. Morgenstern's language is so evocative that you really do feel as if you are standing in the scene, watching it unfold. It's a fascinating alternative reality; magic exists, it can be immensely powerful, yet most people don't notice it happening around them at all.

I did get a little tired of the ambiance being a character, and felt like the plot could have used some more attention. But it was still a beautiful book.
This was ALMOST a 5-star book! I give it 4 and 3/4 stars. The circus setting that the author imagined and described was a work of art; the imagery was beautiful. The only thing holding me back from giving this a full-on 5 star rating is the crazy time-jumping that goes on throughout the whole book... thank goodness there was a date at the beginning of each chapter.
Magical, atmospheric and leaves you a little book-drunk at the end because that is how powerful a hold this world has on you.
It tries really really hard to be sentimental and lasting. It’s really really not.
