original review, March 2015: I really liked this book, a lot. (The title is trite and doesn't make any sense, in my opinion, so ignore it.) I think it helped that I added this to my "to read" list ages ago, and so had forgotten WHY it was on my to-read this, and so knew nothing about it. So I got to figure things out as I went along. I like figuring things out.

It's slow and quiet (you know that's my ish) and doesn't have much of a plot. But it's fascinating and English and I liked it a lot. I re original review, March 2015: I really liked this book, a lot. Additional comments 2/17/2021: The author just added to GoodReads a bunch of notes on his writing this novel. They're really fascinating and if you've read the book, I recommend them. (Boviously don't read the notes if you haven't read the book yet, this book really benefits, imo, from not knowing what one is getting into.) He also talks about the title of the book and it seems really obvious now why the title makes sense? So forget what 2015 Kerry said, she's a dummy who isn't good at paying attention to things.

Also I'm bumping this up from four stars to five, because it's six years later and I still think back on this book fondly and would recommend the heck out of it to people. I still actually REMEMBER scenes from it which is pretty amazing, as my memory is shit. The movie is interesting as well, though of course inferior to the book. ...more
