Bah ...more

pretty good entry in the child hero brings down a dystopia genre (making wild assumptions about the end of the series). Forced into action and harboring a terrible secret -- a true secret that would in fact be horrible to reveal, and justifies her lengthy silence -- the heroine has to learn to experience life from a different perspective. She grows up, like so many of us, in a way she does not expect.

Ug. I read this very popular YA book for my teen book discussion group next week. I’ll be interested in seeing what they think. On the positive side, the main character is a young woman who is trying to find her own way, think for herself, support her friends and likes to have some fun too. On the negative side, they hoverboard. Over and over and explained in minute detail to the point of extreme tediousness. Well, for me. This is a sci fi book (in that it is set in the future) and also a little

So, hey, I ended up liking this book! I will read the other two in the trilogy forthwith. It seems like they were MEANT to be a trilogy, so hopefully they won't be suddenly terrible.
The narrator was pretty annoying, but I got used to it. And the blurb said that the book is for nine and up, so I guess it makes sense that she was so sing-songy about it. I'll be reading the next two in the flesh, though.

This is the second series I have read from this author.
This series has started out nicely. I liked the main character - she has hidden untapped strength, but things she is just "normal". The author does a good job of showing how she is growing and coming into herself.
At least in this first book, we are given mostly an overview of the world and its workings without going into great detail about it. It is mostly from the viewpoint of the teenager so it appears to be mostly superficial, but there ...more

Another fantastic work of young adult fiction. I'm loving this series. Thought-provoking, light enough to take the edge off any sci-fi hesitation I had. Tally Youngblood is inspiring.
