This is one of those books where the audiobook reader was just TERRIBLE. She had a whiny voice which got even worse when she tried to project the different characters. I finally gave up and got the paperback to speed read through the last several chapters (2 CDs). Even when I was listening and so annoyed with the reader, the content itself was good enough to keep going until I could get back to the library.

This young adult novel is the first in a series by Scott Westerfeld. In this novel set 300 plus years in the future, mankind has survived a global catastrophe both by living a much more sustainable lifestyle but also by making everyone equally "pretty." This is the second series I have read from this author.

This series has started out nicely. I liked the main character - she has hidden untapped strength, but things she is just "normal". The author does a good job of showing how she is growing and coming into herself.

At least in this first book, we are given mostly an overview of the world and its workings without going into great detail about it. It is mostly from the viewpoint of the teenager so it appears to be mostly superficial, but there
