meh. a friend lent this book to me, and I was so excited to finally read it. I've been wanting it for awhile. and I was so disappointed. the book was hard to get into, and really dragged after the beginning. I had a difficult time liking or caring about Tally, since she got herself into the situations, and only cared about being pretty. then her relationship with David was built on a lie. I kept screaming at the book, just tell the truth, stupid! ugh! the ending was intriguing, finally, but cons

I was told of this book by Slayra, who had an extra copy. As a rule I never say no to a given book, even if the subject doesn't appeal me, so I kept it. I must confess that I picked it up with some apprehension, not that I doubt her reviews (after all she was right when she couldn't finish reading Twilight *whistles innocently*) but the theme didn't seemed quite my thing. This book has been sitting on my shelf for a long time, and I’m glad I finally got around to reading it. Tally’s world is physically the same as ours (as in, Earth), but time and an apocalypse (an oil-destroying bacteria) have changed things. Much of the world is uninhabited, and most of those that remain live in segregated cities such as Tally’s. On one side of the river are the young, the Uglies. On the other side, the Pretties.

This is in my pile of "what the world could be like if we don't shape up" young adult science fiction books. In this version, people are "ugly" (officially) until they reach 16 and have a full body makeover, basically, and become officially "Pretty". I liked the story a lot, but it didn't really END as much as say "To be continued". I know it's hyped as the first in the trilogy, but I wasn't so satisfied with that. Sigh. Now I have to read "Pretties".

I borrowed this from my best friend in 2009 but didn't have time to finish it (being in grad school and all that). It's an interesting concept, though, and I hope to read the whole series once I have "free time" again.
