The Gap of Time is part of a series of modern retellings of Shakespeare's works. The real joy of reading Winterson is the background on Shakespeare's late plays. Her professorial approach gets to the heart of her update. In her description, Shakespeare had three types of endings: tragedy, revenge, and forgiveness. The theme of forgiveness and time drive the plot. Does the loss of time with someone dominate the conscious, or does time heal all wounds?
