Well-structured and well-written memoir about the crazy summer that Alan Cumming spent shooting an episode of the British series "Who Do You Think You Are?" learning about his maternal grandfather and undergoing emotional upheaving from his abusive father. Cumming has a great writing style and while many parts of the book, particularly episodes from this childhood, are upsetting and sad, he doesn't let the reader dwell or wallow in the past. Celebrity memoirs aren't usually my thing, but this is Alan friggin' Cumming. I only need to hear his Scottish brogue to be charmed, and it comes through in this book. He tells the tale of his dreadful childhood with his violent and angry father, which unfolds as he alternates those chapters with the story of his appearance on the UK TV show, Who Do You Think You Are? I liked this one. I can't imagine having to live with a father like his. I thought it was paced well and the jumping back and forth in time didn't bother me. I wish I could see his episode of Who Do You Think You Are? That would be interesting.
