I think this was another book that failed to live up to all the hype. It took a lot of effort for me to actually get through it, and I feel like it wasn't worth all that work. I'm not a fan of the writing style and I felt confused by some of the minor characters and basically the point of having them in the story. Just not my book I guess.

My earlier review disappeared. In short, it said that I rarely abandon a book, especially when it's a book club read, but I finally got tired of slogging through this disjointed traipse through magical realism, with not enough realism for this reader. I got 70% through and still wasn't invested in any if the characters. Underlying the whole book is a tragedy introduced at the beginning, with a looming dread of finding out how the terrible event occurred. I find I no longer care.

This was enjoyable, and the writing was beautiful, but at times I felt a bit impatient to get on with the story.
