I don't generally evoke jewelry to talk about books, but this novel deserves all the diamonds and rubies and emeralds I can muster. The prose glitters and sparkles; the plotting is as intricate and finely wrought as a gold chain. Beautiful! ...more

I felt like Roy was enamored of her own story too much. The way she withheld details of Sophie Mol's death felt manipulative, an omniscience on the author's part withheld to keep me reading. But I did find myself, when the story did finally reveal itself in the last few pages, to be really moved. ...more
