While I don't think my sense of humor lines up that well with Moran's (I never felt the need to name my vagina), this is a humorous memoir/examination of feminism. Moran begins each chapter (they are roughly in chronological order) discussing an event in her life (starting her period, getting married, etc.) and then moving into a discussion of how that issue is handled in contemporary Western Society (Moran is British) with a feminist slant. I liked reading about her large family (they lived in

Oh, fuck yes. Everything about this book is yes.

Everything I heard about How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran indicated that I would enjoy the book: funny, strong feminist perspective, and a quick read. The book was picked for a book club that is no longer in existence, but I still wanted to finish the selection. When I read the prologue, I was immediately struck by the line "zero tolerance on all patriarchal bullshit." As I dove into the first chapters, I started to struggle. I really enjoyed this book. It was delightfully funny and very clear cut and to the truth of what feminism is and should be. However, I am concerned that the only people reading this book are the women who agree already with Moran and are this kind of feminist. I'm pretty sure Caitlin Moran and I were cut from the same cloth, which was pretty clear after her second use of "Tits McGee." I loved this and found that I needed a kick in the pants when it came to the modern feminist movement. She is very funny but the writing can be hit or miss. Either way, worth reading. ...more

I don't think I've ever done such a 180 about a book before. After the first couple chapters, I was tempted to abandon the book. I thought Caitlin Moran was trying too hard, and I didn't find her take on adolescence to be interesting or very insightful.
But the author really hit her stride with the feminism chapter, and from that point on, I found it hard to put the book down. I highlighted dozens of passages that either cracked me up or struck a meaningful chord with me, and I'm certain I'll re ...more
