I liked this and can certainly understand why the kids always rave about it. It probably would have helped if this had been my first dystopian novel instead of my 50th.

I like the idea of this book, but I wish Lowry would write it more elaborately. For me the tension and action of this book is a bit half baked, and the conclusion is not satisfying. I know that this book is the first of the series, but when I read the synopsis of the other books, turned out it's not that related to Jonah's adventure in The Giver. I wonder how the movie will be.

You read it in middle school, you know what it's about. But did you look closely? Did you see the biblical allusions, the arguments about euthanasia, the question of order and labels, the parallels to our own censorship in schools? Did you? DID YOU?

I don't know how I'd never read this book before, but wow...definitely deserving of all of the praise and awards it's gotten. Remarkable.
