The first time I read this book, it was newly published -- it hadn't even won the Newbery yet. I was an adolescent. I had never heard the word "dystopia." All I knew was that I had never read anything like it.

Fine for middle schoolers. Reading The Giver as an adult, I'm surprised at how faux-deep the plot and the underlying message are. When I read the book -- a couple times -- as an adolescent, it seemed thought-provoking. I guess at the time it was?

I have to say, the times I read this before I would've said that I wasn't a fan. However, books will hit you differently depending on WHEN you read them and who you are at the time. I loved this book upon reading it again. The reflection of how differently I feel about it now versus when I read it as a child, and then again in my 20s (before I had children), is really interesting to me.
