Such a well crafted book, more like interwoven short stories than a true novel. Depressing and uncomfortable-making, but so good and well written. I love that we meet so many characters, we learn so much about them and their development (and there are really no stagnant characters in this book), and *all* our questions about them are answered at the end. I don't see how Egan could have accomplished this in a linear, traditional novel format.

This came across to me as the music version of Let the Great World Spin. The only issue for me is that the stories weren't as moving and I didn't find myself too connected to any of the characters. It was late in the novel and I still had to flip through earlier sections of the book to remember characters.
