When I read Neil Gaimans short stories, I'm left feeling like I'm not clever enough (or well read enough) to "get it," or it's an inside joke that I just don't get. It's a funny thing, because I don't feel that way about his comic books or his novels. There's just not a full world in many of these short pieces. It's still really good though.

Some of these stories fall flat, some feel masterful, but most of these stories are not

"I like things to be story-shaped."

So says the narrator of The Flints of Memory Lane, one of the stories in this collection. I agree wholeheartedly.

Which is why I'm only giving this a 3-star rating. Not because the writing is poor, but because so few of these stories are actually, well, story-shaped. Also, it's such a mix of genres, not all of which I enjoy...

I really loved this collection of short stories and poems and oddities. The stories are mostly fantasy/horror type and a lot of them really stuck in my mind and made me think. If you like anything else of Gaiman's, I recommend this book.

Gaiman's writing is beautiful, as is his voice (such a great bonus that he narrates this himself! I love listening to him). However, I have a hard time listening to such short snippets while I'm driving, and by the time I know what is going on, the story is over. I definitely want to read the rest of this, so will have to pick it up somewhere soon! ...more
