At first, I was very interested and invested myself in the story of Lotto and Mathilde. Lotto's crazy childhood and family is interesting enough to make me stay focused. But the second part of the story, that discussed about Mathilde's life-- ugh!!!! So unreadable. Pretentious and bitchy, that's what I perceived Mathilde and sorry - I can't sympathized with her. For me, she ruined this book.

Interesting way to approach the portrayal of a marriage - painting a picture primarily from one character's point of view and then switching to the other's, filling the gaps and rewriting the narrative with a different set of information. That said, from the point of the switch, it got somewhat melodramatic and pretentious for me. The first character is supposed to be more likeable, which he is, but in painting the seamy underbelly of the lies told in marriage... it just got a little overwrought

This was slow to start for me, but in the end I enjoyed it. I liked the structure of the novel quite a bit: it's focused on a marriage, and the first part of the book shows the husband's perspective; in the second part you get the wife's back story and point of view. Really fascinating and the story itself is told well. Definitely recommend picking this up if you're interested.
