At first, I was very interested and invested myself in the story of Lotto and Mathilde. Lotto's crazy childhood and family is interesting enough to make me stay focused. But the second part of the story, that discussed about Mathilde's life-- ugh!!!! So unreadable. Pretentious and bitchy, that's what I perceived Mathilde and sorry - I can't sympathized with her. For me, she ruined this book.

I loved both the Fate and Fury parts of this book. As someone who struggles to acknowledge her own anger, the second half of the book was a bit of an adjustment. But this book is such an eloquent commentary on who we really are and how others see us. It's worth reading the hard things that Lotto and Mathilde go through in order to think about your own relationships and life.

I really enjoyed both sides of this story; comparing and contrasting the two is fascinating. I'm not sure I really liked Lotto or Mathilde, but I'd love to meet the latter. Or better yet, see the movie (I hope they make it one day!)
This would be a really interesting bookclub discussion - themes of love, loss, secrets, motherhood...and of course marriage. ...more

This book was so different than I expected. I thought it would be trite, perhaps humorous at times. I found it richly layered with a Gothic feel; it was quite a bit darker than I anticipated. I'd give this book 5 stars for plot and Groff's wonderful writing, 2.5 for character likability.

I would agree with other reviewers that this is written with beautiful language and style. There were times when I was slightly put off by the story, but kept reading to just hear the words in my head. It is a complicated story of a marriage, and while unusual in some sense, it also was a true love story. The first half of the book is told from Lotto's perspective, and then we Mathilde's story in the second half. I enjoyed the style of storytelling, the back and forth and skipping from history t

I just finished it and I'm still processing what happened. My heart is so heavy right now.

This did drag a little in the late beginning/early middle, and I wasn't sure I wanted to keep going, but I'm glad I read a review that said keep going, because I did, and things turn unexpectedly just when you think the characters (and the book) are stuck in the doldrums. After that I was hooked. I love how the narrative splits halfway through and reveals Mathilde's version of her life and marriage; the second, 'Furies' section was more fascinating, but I found a certain remove in both sections
