*Unpopular Opinion Alert!*

Ugh. I can’t remember the last time my expectations were so high and the reality was so low.

This should’ve been an easy home run for me! It’s right in my wheelhouse! Literary fiction about a couple over the course of their 24-year marriage, told from the point of view of the husband for the first half, the wife the second. A book about marriage and friendships and family, a book that asks you to consider if you can truly know a person. Sounds good, right?

At page 60, I decided to abandon this novel. I had no interest in seeing where the plot went and was not invested in the future of any of the characters. There are too many other books I want to read to force myself to stay with this one, despite its high reputation.

Summer 2016 Bingo - Free Square.

I really enjoyed both sides of this story; comparing and contrasting the two is fascinating. I'm not sure I really liked Lotto or Mathilde, but I'd love to meet the latter. Or better yet, see the movie (I hope they make it one day!)

This would be a really interesting bookclub discussion - themes of love, loss, secrets, motherhood...and of course marriage.

I thought this book was a bit overhyped, but still very good. I certainly had a hard time putting it down. I will agree with other reviews that the Fates section was slow to start and a bit repetitive, and the Furies section had some plot points that I saw coming from a mile away, but I liked the book overall and I liked spending time with these frequently horrible but still compelling people.

Loved the writing...hated pretty much every character for all being terrible people.
