What Members Thought

Very descriptive and well thought out, the main characters were thoroughly fleshed out with all their charms and flaws. Half-way the book, I had grown rather tired of the overly flowing prose and then I had to trudge through the second half (just because I wanted to know how the story ended). I don't expect to like all characters in books I read, but there simply wasn't anyone that I felt invested in. Left me feeling underwhelmed.

This seemed to be the book to read in 2015, yet I was underwhelmed by the whole story. The first 65% of the book "Fates" is the husband's story. The remaining 35% is "Furies" and the wife's story. The wife's story is more interesting and it was a problem that there was a lot less of it. The twists at the end weren't that exciting to me. I was left feeling disappointed.

Not liking the characters doesn't help me get into this book. The husband is a self-absorbed actor/writer, the wife a cold sylph. They have so much sex that they must be taking all sorts of enhancement drugs. Their friends are obnoxious, sleazy and whiny.
That being said, the author did the best she could with loathe some characters. ...more

I kept hearing that this was a book that captured the complexities of marriage, but honestly the couple portrayed is a little elite and unbearable. I also was a little turned off by how Mathilde is portrayed as having very little life outside of Lotto. Enjoyable overall, beautiful phrases peppered throughout, but somewhat a little boring.
