At first the over-the-top characters grated on me, but gradually I got into the spirit of things and found myself enjoying the ludicrous melodrama. I ended up really enjoying this!! Balancing the melodrama with Rachel’s down-to-earth American attitude was genius. The story is told with an omniscient narrator, bouncing from scene to scene a like a TV soap, with each vignette ending on a tiny cliff-hanger.

Meh. I was looking for a silly, fun book to read over the holidays. It was certainly silly, but lacked the acerbic wit of his second book in this series, China Rich Girlfriend. It’s all a fairly ridiculous premise: soap opera drama amongst the old money Singapore families and their jet setting children, with an American middle class kid thrown into the mix. I’m glad I read this, as it helps me understand the characters in the series a little better, but it was pretty heavy handed with the dialog

Entertaining enough. I appreciate getting a bit more of the backstory on Astrid than happens in the movie, but really missed the pretty pictures. I'll probably read the other two as well, but I'm in no hurry with that.
