The Actual rating is 3.5 .
It's very well written and doesn't waste the reader's time in too much detail about everything that seems epidemic to writers these days (That's what I like about John Scalzi books).
Characters are well processed; however the book has some flaws like there is always right person at the right time, which is a little difficult to buy. ...more

Dear Reader,
I think I love authors who, like Tolkien, build entire worlds with fully-fleshed back histories in order to tell their stories. You can tell that Scalzi knew his imaginary world inside and out as he wrote his mystery novel, and that fact was brought home by the bonus content included in the book: an entire oral history of Haden's Disease. I was blown away by the detail in this section, which wasn't even part of the original novel: if you've read World War Z, you will ha ...more

This book has a really interesting premise that drew me into the story. I wasn't expecting so much of a crime procedural and it took me a little bit to get into the story, but once I did, I was hooked. I especially liked the "bonus novella" that explains the origins and history of Hayden's Syndrome. Narrator Wil Wheaton does a fine job, nothing super special but fine to listen to. I listened to most of this book during the car trip back from Kansas City this weekend.

I've said before that I enjoy Wil Wheaton's reading - and that hasn't changed with this book. (Again, no voices, or accents, but subtle differences between the 'feel' of the characters.)
This is the second John Scalzi book I've 'read' (listened to). Again, the universe and the premise is great - maybe not completely original, but I'm a big sci fi/fantasy fan and so I'm used to ideas being oddly familiar.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I looked forward to my commute each day - and I didn't realis ...more

A lot happens in the week covered in this political/spy thriller for YAs, too much to be believed, if you stop to think. No time for that, though, as the action builds to a satisfying climax. It's science fiction only because of its premise---a virus that causes its victims to be 'locked in' their bodies has swept through the world. It has no cure, but victims can use robots to function in the world while their bodies are fed and cared for in their vegetative states. One such person becomes an F

Well done Spec-fic murder mystery, unlike any other I've read (or at least remember). I went in not knowing anything about the book other than that a flu-like virus had infected the Earth. Once there was mention of Threeps I knew this was something different. I wasn't drawn in enough to continue with the series, though.
