I know this is an outstanding work for a lot of people, but it was so different from what I expected. I thought it was hard to follow and it just didn't grab my attention. I gave up on it.

I've read other Holocaust related materials, but none have affected me like this one. Excellent story weaving together Vladek's story of 1930s-1940s Poland/Germany -- the war on the Jews, the war in Europe, the experience of hiding, the work camps, liberation -- and the contemporary story of Vladek and his son Artie. The chapter dealing with Artie and his shrink captures some of the tension in the book. How can you be so angry with your father ...more

I read an article this morning about how to write better book reviews. It was all, don't just base your reviews on your emotional attachment to the setting or characters, but instead be more critical of the literary merits of the work. It has me thinking. On one hand, I understand the author's point. I want to be able to recommend good books. On the other, most people react to books emotionally - so making those indications can be extremely helpful.
