I picked this book up out of desperation while I was traveling in Italy. I had been looking for Elena Ferrante's "My Brilliant Friend" in English, but couldn't find it (I know, I was surprised, too) and so I had to settle for something set in Italy instead of something written by an Italian. I'd already seen the movie, but it was so awful (even with Judi Dench and Maggie Smith and Helena Bonham Carter in it - unbelievable!) that I assumed the book, to be so famous, had to be much better.
