This is the third book of Mary Oliver's poems that I've read this year, and they started to feel a little "samey." Some poems in this volume felt almost smug. But the magic is definitely still there.

This is my third volume of Mary Oliver's poetry this year and I liked it the least of the three. (I started with Thirst, then read Why I Wake Early.) House of Light was written several years before the other volumes and I could see how her poetry developed over the years. I simply liked the more developed poetry found in her later books.

I especially liked "White Owl Flies Into and Out of the Field" and her motifs of light and fire. Each of her works contains a message on humanity and nature. A favorite poet.

3.5 stars. I think it would probably be 4 if I spent more time with them, but honestly, I love Oliver's "Thirst" so much that it's hard to rate this as highly fresh out of the gate.
