The sequel to Wolf Hall & every bit as good, though totally different in scope & pacing. Where WH was leisurely, BUTB is brisk, covering just 9 months at the end of Anne Boleyn's life. Perfect sentence-level writing, great plotting (how do you make historical facts suspenseful? Ask Hilary Mantel!), and the continuation of one of my favorite psychological portraits in a long time. Can't wait (but will have to) for The Mirror & The Light.

I think this was closer to 4.5 for me, but still excellent. I thought the use of "he" was clearer in this go round, but still stood out sometimes.otherwise, the writing was truly great. I love the take on this part of the history from Cromwell's POV, and I am loving the softer side of Cromwell. I think Anne's downfall is more interesting than her rise, so this book had me there in any case.
