To say that I did not love this book quite as fiercely as Wolf Hall is in no way a condemnation, considering how strongly I felt about the first book in this trilogy. In Wolf Hall, Cromwell was mostly ascending to power, and in Bring Up the Bodies, he's holding onto it. Both require compromises of course, but now that Cromwell has all the power he needs to deliver comeuppance to those who tore Cardinal Wolsley down, it's almost uncomfortable to see it meted out.

Excellent. Of course, I know that even biography can't ever hope to recreate the exact experience or story of any place and time, but Mantel made me think "that is what could have happened" many many times while I was listening to this book the last ten days, fighting through my commute. Beautiful writing, amazing and fresh grasp of characters many of us Tudor nerds know as well as Shakespeare's. Oh, I enjoyed this book so much more than Wolf Hall. The author tweaked her tenses just a bit and made it so much easier to read - much less distracting. The second installment of the Thomas Cromwell trilogy carries the reader through the life and death of King Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn.
I am amazed at all the intrigue, assignations, manipulations, and power plays that went on in royal and courtly society. What a mess! But fascinating, all the same. Mantel's books make me want to read ...more
